The South Island !

The South Island is stunning, absolutely gorgeous. Our journey began by leaving Christchurch early and we cut West, straight across the country. This was a trip of amazing sight seeing. Endless snowcapped mountains andradiant blue lakes.  Our South Island trip saw the sights of Punakaiki, known for his Pancake Rock formation, Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers, the Milford Sound, Queenstown, Dunedin, home of the world's smallest penguins, Omaru, Mount Cook, Lake Tekapo and a night on the Christchurch Airport floor.

By far our favourite part about the South Island was Queenstown. It is similar to Whistler but much smaller and instead the mountains being the focal point there was a beautiful lake the drew the town together called Lake Wakatipu . We indulged on the worlds best burgers at Ferg Burger, hiked the Tika Tika trail to look over the entire town, went to the Saturday farm market and if we had more time and money we could have taken in another rafting adventure, bungee or skydive. We were contemplating going back after our time in Dunedin but at the last second Carlo turned right instead of left.

Dunedin was home to the worlds smallest penguins. We had to go in the late afternoon in order to catch a glimpse of the waddling bird. I was about 100 metres ahead of Carlo when a little guy emerged from the water. I was so mesmerized by his waddle and where he was going I forgot to take a picture. I finally got one as he was heading towards his nest. We drove up to Omaru to penguin watch again, that night we saw 3 little guys coming home after a day of fishing and swimming. They are really something.

New Zealand was incredible and we both can only hope that one day we will go back. There are so many places to go and things to see and do. It is a very clean, natural and respectful country full of culture. I recommend anyone who enjoys camping to go there.

We miss you all. We have hit half way in our adventure and will be home in only 5 months!

Cheers,
Carmen and Carlo
